India’s largest medical entrance examination, NEET UG 2026, has landed in the middle of a massive controversy after investigators uncovered a viral WhatsApp “guess paper” that allegedly contained questions matching the actual exam.
What initially appeared to be another routine circulation of unofficial study material soon turned into a nationwide scandal. The discovery eventually led the National Testing Agency (NTA) to cancel the May 3 examination, impacting more than 22 lakh medical aspirants across the country.
At the centre of the controversy was a small but significant WhatsApp label — “Forwarded many times” — a tag automatically generated by WhatsApp for highly circulated messages. Investigators believe this digital trail revealed that the alleged paper had spread widely before the examination date.
The ‘Guess Paper’ That Raised Suspicion
According to officials involved in the investigation, Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) discovered a PDF document containing nearly 410 questions. Reports indicate that more than 100 of those questions allegedly matched the actual NEET UG 2026 paper, particularly in chemistry and biology sections.
The material was reportedly circulating weeks before the examination and had reached students through WhatsApp groups and digital forwarding chains. Investigators suspect that the file was repeatedly shared across states, making it difficult to trace the original source.
Officials investigating the case believe the circulation trail may have started from Dehradun before spreading through Rajasthan, Kerala, and other states via students and intermediaries.
How the Leak Investigation Unfolded
The investigation reportedly intensified after authorities found the “guess paper” on the mobile phones of candidates linked to the exam. Rajasthan SOG officials then began tracing message histories, forwarding patterns, and digital sharing networks.
One of the biggest red flags was the repeated forwarding status attached to the WhatsApp message. Officials reportedly viewed it as evidence that the material had spread far beyond isolated student circles.
Investigators are now examining whether coaching centres, middlemen, or organised exam rackets were involved in distributing the material before the exam. Several suspects have already been detained, and digital devices are being analysed for communication records.
Why NTA Cancelled NEET UG 2026
Facing growing pressure and mounting evidence, the National Testing Agency officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination on May 12.
The agency stated that the decision was necessary to maintain the fairness, transparency, and integrity of the national medical entrance examination. Officials also confirmed that fresh examination dates would be announced separately.
The Centre has now ordered a CBI probe into the matter, while multiple state agencies continue parallel investigations into the alleged paper leak network.
Students Left Frustrated and Exhausted
The cancellation has triggered widespread anger and emotional distress among students and parents. Many aspirants had spent years preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance exam, often under intense academic and financial pressure.
Student groups staged protests in Delhi and several other cities, demanding strict action against those responsible and stronger safeguards for future examinations. Political leaders across parties also criticised the handling of the examination process.
Several students expressed concern over the mental stress of preparing again for the re-exam within a short period.
Fresh NEET UG 2026 Exam Dates Expected Soon
The NTA has clarified that fresh registration is unlikely to be required and no additional examination fee will be charged from candidates appearing in the re-exam. Revised admit cards and updated schedules are expected to be released soon through official channels.
Students are being advised to avoid rumours circulating online and rely only on verified notifications regarding:
- NEET UG 2026 re-exam dates
- Admit cards
- Exam city slips
- Counselling schedules
- Official NTA announcements
Bigger Questions Over India’s Examination System
The NEET UG 2026 controversy has once again exposed concerns surrounding exam security in India. Experts believe the incident highlights the urgent need for:
- AI-powered exam monitoring
- Encrypted question paper distribution
- Real-time digital surveillance
- Stronger anti-paper leak laws
- Faster cybercrime detection systems
With India’s competitive exams involving millions of students every year, the credibility of the examination system has now become a major national concern.
For lakhs of aspiring doctors, the coming weeks will now determine not just admission timelines, but also trust in one of India’s most important entrance examinations.
