The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has achieved a significant milestone by completing over one crore mandatory biometric updates (MBUs) for schoolchildren across India — a key step in keeping Aadhaar records up-to-date and functional for essential services and examinations. This large-scale initiative reflects coordinated efforts between UIDAI, state education departments and school authorities to ensure accurate identity verification for children as they grow older.
Why Biometric Updates for Children Matter
When children are enrolled in Aadhaar before the age of five, only demographic information like name, date of birth, gender and address is captured. Biometric details — namely fingerprints and iris scans — are not recorded at that time because these features are not fully mature and stable.
As per UIDAI rules:
- Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBUs) are required when a child crosses 5 and 15 years of age.
- Failure to complete these updates may lead to authentication problems when accessing government services, scholarships, or registering for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, CUET.
Ensuring biometric updates helps keep Aadhaar data accurate and prevents issues with identity authentication needed for benefits and academic opportunities.
Massive Nationwide Drive: 1 Crore Updates Completed
In a mission-mode effort that began in September 2025, UIDAI spearheaded a special biometric update campaign targeting schoolchildren across the country. The results so far are impressive:
- Over one crore MBUs completed.
- Effort conducted in 83,000 schools nationwide.
- Initiative marked by collaborations with education departments and school administrations.
- The drive is still ongoing until all schools are covered.
Free Biometric Updates for Children Aged 7–15
To encourage participation and remove financial barriers, UIDAI waived biometric update fees for children between 7–15 years of age from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026. This means parents and guardians do not have to pay for MBUs during this period, boosting update completion.
Children can also complete MBUs at:
- Aadhaar enrolment centres
- Aadhaar Seva Kendras
in addition to school-based camps.
Technology Integration and Strategy
A key enabler of this successful drive was UIDAI’s integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), a platform that allowed:
- Identification of children due for biometric updates.
- Efficient planning of on-campus update camps.
- Real-time tracking of progress across schools.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar has also reached out to Chief Secretaries of States and Union Territories to further support focused biometric update camps, ensuring seamless coordination and implementation.
What Parents & Guardians Need to Know
Here’s what families should keep in mind:
- MBUs are required once a child crosses 5 and again at 15 years of age.
- While Aadhaar can be issued without biometrics before age 5, failure to update later may lead to authentication difficulties.
- UIDAI has temporarily made MBUs free for ages 7–15, lowering barriers to completion.
- Updates can be done at school-based camps or at enrolment centres across the country.
Impact on Education and Government Services
Timely completion of biometric updates ensures that children can:
- Seamlessly use Aadhaar for school admissions.
- Register for key competitive exams like NEET, JEE and CUET without verification issues.
- Access government benefits tied to Aadhaar authentication, including scholarships, DBT schemes and welfare entitlements.
