In a significant boost to accessible education, the Karnataka government has announced that Pre-University (PU) students will receive free textbooks starting from the 2026–27 academic session. The move marks a major expansion of the existing scheme, which was earlier limited to students up to Class 10.
The decision is expected to benefit lakhs of students across government and aided PU colleges, easing the financial burden on families and strengthening the state’s commitment to inclusive education.
A Big Relief for Students and Parents
The extension of the free textbook scheme is being widely welcomed as a student-centric reform, particularly for those from economically weaker backgrounds.
Until now, students entering Pre-University courses had to bear the cost of textbooks, which often posed a challenge for families in rural and low-income segments. With this new policy:
- Students in arts, science, and commerce streams will receive textbooks at no cost
- The initiative will cover both first and second-year PU students
- It ensures continuity in support beyond secondary education
By removing this financial barrier, the government aims to improve access and retention in higher secondary education.
Large-Scale Implementation Across Colleges
Karnataka has an extensive network of PU institutions, including:
- Over 1,300 government PU colleges
- More than 800 aided PU colleges
The scheme will be implemented across these institutions, ensuring that students from diverse regions and backgrounds benefit equally.
Authorities have also approved funding for the printing and distribution of textbooks and workbooks, ensuring timely availability before the academic session begins.
Strengthening Education Equity
This move reflects a broader effort by the state to promote equitable education opportunities. By extending benefits to PU students, the government is addressing a critical transition phase where many students tend to drop out due to financial constraints.
Key objectives of the scheme include:
- Reducing the cost of education for families
- Encouraging students to continue beyond Class 10
- Bridging the gap between school and higher education
Such initiatives are particularly important in ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder academic aspirations.
