The fallout from the alleged NEET UG 2026 paper leak has now reached the Supreme Court, with fresh petitions demanding major reforms in India’s examination system and questioning the credibility of the National Testing Agency (NTA).
A doctors’ body has reportedly moved the apex court seeking either the replacement or complete restructuring of the NTA following the cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 examination. The plea argues that repeated controversies surrounding national-level entrance tests point toward a “systemic failure” in the examination process.
The development comes just days after the NTA cancelled the May 3 NEET UG exam amid allegations that a widely circulated “guess paper” matched several questions from the actual examination. Over 22 lakh medical aspirants were affected by the decision.
What the Supreme Court Plea Demands
The petition reportedly seeks a complete overhaul of the way national entrance examinations are conducted in India.
Among the key demands made before the Supreme Court are:
- Replacement or restructuring of the National Testing Agency
- Conducting the fresh NEET UG 2026 exam under judicial supervision
- Formation of an independent monitoring committee
- Stronger cybersecurity and paper encryption systems
- Real-time digital surveillance during examinations
- Greater transparency in exam administration
The plea also reportedly calls for the creation of a dedicated National Examination Integrity Commission (NEIC) to oversee high-stakes competitive examinations in India.
The proposed monitoring mechanism may include retired judges, cybersecurity experts, and forensic specialists to ensure the integrity of future examinations.
Why the NTA Is Under Intense Scrutiny
The National Testing Agency, established in 2017 to conduct standardized entrance examinations, has faced repeated criticism in recent years over alleged paper leaks, technical glitches, irregularities, and examination management failures.
The NEET UG 2026 controversy has intensified those concerns because it comes less than two years after the massive NEET 2024 controversy, which had also triggered nationwide protests and Supreme Court hearings.
Education experts and student organisations argue that despite promises of reform after the 2024 crisis, many recommended changes were never fully implemented.
A high-level committee led by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan had earlier suggested sweeping reforms in the examination process, including stronger digital security, AI-based monitoring systems, and improved accountability mechanisms. However, reports indicate that several of those recommendations remain pending.
How the NEET UG 2026 Leak Controversy Escalated
The controversy erupted after investigators reportedly discovered that a “guess paper” circulated through WhatsApp and Telegram groups before the examination contained questions closely matching the actual NEET UG paper.
Authorities later claimed that more than 100 questions from biology and chemistry sections may have matched the exam conducted on May 3.
Investigators suspect that organised paper leak networks sold the leaked material for amounts ranging between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh across multiple states.
The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing possible links involving intermediaries, digital groups, and coaching networks.
Demand for Judicial Oversight Grows
The Supreme Court plea has amplified calls for judicial oversight of competitive examinations, especially after repeated controversies involving recruitment and entrance exams in India.
Student organisations and education activists argue that independent supervision is necessary to restore public confidence in the examination system.
Some experts have also proposed transitioning NEET to a computer-based testing format to reduce the risks associated with physical transportation of question papers.
Will NEET UG 2026 Be Conducted Again?
Yes. The NTA has officially confirmed that the cancelled NEET UG 2026 exam will be conducted again.
Fresh examination dates are expected to be announced soon. Authorities have also clarified that candidates will not need to complete fresh registration or pay additional examination fees for the re-test.
Students have been advised to continue preparation and rely only on official notifications regarding:
- NEET UG 2026 re-exam dates
- Revised admit cards
- Exam city slips
- Counselling schedules
- Official NTA announcements
Bigger Questions Over India’s Examination System
The NEET UG 2026 controversy has once again reignited national debate over the integrity of India’s competitive examination system.
Over the past few years, several national and state-level examinations have faced allegations involving:
- Paper leaks
- Technical failures
- Biometric glitches
- Organised cheating rackets
- Administrative lapses
Experts believe these repeated disruptions are eroding public trust in high-stakes examinations that shape the careers of millions of students every year.
The Supreme Court’s response to the latest petitions could now play a crucial role in determining the future structure of entrance examination governance in India.
