PM Modi Opens Gateway to Kashmir’s All-Weather Connectivity
PM Modi Inaugurates the Z-Morh Tunnel
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highly anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel. Built at a cost of ₹2,700 crore, this engineering marvel provides year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir. The project marks a significant milestone in enhancing the region’s infrastructure and accessibility.
The Need for the Z-Morh Tunnel
The harsh winters of Kashmir often isolate Sonamarg, a key tourist destination, while hindering crucial military operations. The Z-Morh Tunnel addresses these challenges by ensuring uninterrupted connectivity, even during severe snowfall and avalanches. Its construction is vital for bolstering both tourism and strategic operations in Ladakh.
Construction Journey and Challenges
- Initial Delays: The project began in 2012 but faced setbacks due to financial and administrative hurdles.
- Contract Shifts: Initially awarded to Tunnelway Ltd., the project was later managed by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
- Final Phase: APCO Infratech took over, completing the project in February 2024, with the formal inauguration delayed due to local election protocols.
Key Features of the Tunnel
- Length: 6.4 kilometres.
- Cost: ₹2,700 crore.
- Design: Equipped to withstand extreme weather conditions.
- All-Weather Access: Ensures connectivity to Sonamarg throughout the year.
Strategic Importance
The Z-Morh Tunnel is an essential segment of the larger Zojila Tunnel project, aimed at connecting Srinagar with Ladakh. Its strategic benefits include:
- Defence Support: Facilitates smoother movement of military logistics and personnel, enhancing India’s defence preparedness near sensitive borders.
- Economic Stability: Ensures trade and transport continuity in the region.
- Reduced Isolation: Improves access to remote areas, promoting regional integration.
Economic and Environmental Impact
- Tourism Growth: The tunnel ensures year-round access, boosting tourism in Sonamarg and nearby regions.
- Local Livelihoods: Enhanced connectivity supports local businesses and generates employment.
- Sustainability Measures: The project incorporates eco-friendly construction practices to minimize environmental impact.
A New Era for Kashmir’s Connectivity
The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel signifies a new chapter in Kashmir’s development. It bridges the gap between seasonal isolation and year-round integration, strengthening the region’s tourism, economy, and defence capabilities.
