In a landmark reform for India’s school examination system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 board examination answer sheets starting with the 2026 academic session. This strategic shift from traditional physical checking to digital evaluation aims to make the assessment process faster, more accurate, equitable, and transparent for nearly 46 lakh students across India and in CBSE-affiliated schools internationally.


What is On-Screen Marking?

On-Screen Marking (OSM) is a digital evaluation system in which scanned copies of students’ answer books are uploaded to a secure online platform. Examiners log in with credentials to assess papers on their computer screens — replacing manual, paper-based marking with a streamlined computer-assisted workflow.

Unlike automated AI grading, human teachers continue to evaluate answers — but the entire process happens digitally, allowing better oversight, reduced errors, and easier quality checks.


Why CBSE Is Introducing OSM

CBSE’s decision to adopt On-Screen Marking is guided by several important goals:

1. Better Efficiency & Speed
Digital evaluation eliminates logistical delays associated with transporting physical answer books and speeds up overall marking and result declaration timelines.

2. Reduced Errors & Enhanced Accuracy
Automated coordination and on-screen scoring reduce totalling mistakes, missing pages in evaluation and manual inconsistencies, ensuring a fairer outcome for students.

3. Wider Teacher Participation
Teachers from all CBSE-affiliated schools — including those in remote locations and overseas — can participate in evaluation without leaving their institutions, reducing disruption to regular teaching duties.

4. Environmentally Sustainable Practice
By cutting down on the physical handling of papers and related transport, OSM supports eco-friendly digital transformation in examinations.


How the Transition Will Work

CBSE has issued guidelines requiring schools to prepare their infrastructure for OSM:

  • Computer labs with public static IP addresses and systems with Windows 8 or higher and at least 4 GB RAM.
  • Updated internet browsers (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox) and Adobe Reader installed.
  • Minimum 2 Mbps internet connectivity and uninterrupted power supply.

CBSE will also support teachers and schools with:

  • Training workshops and dry runs.
  • Instructional videos and dedicated technical support channels.

Teachers will be given access to the OSM platform via their OASIS IDs and encouraged to familiarise themselves well before the evaluation period begins.


What Stays the Same — Class 10 Evaluation

CBSE has clarified that Class 10 answer books will continue to be evaluated physically for the 2026 session. The digital OSM system applies only to Class 12 board exam papers this year, ensuring that the change does not disrupt younger students during this transition phase.
