WBCHSE to Introduce Contemporary, Project-Based Subjects in HS Curriculum from 2026–27

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced a significant curriculum overhaul for the Higher Secondary (HS) level that will be implemented from the 2026–27 academic session. Aimed at making school education more relevant to real-world trends, the initiative involves the introduction of new contemporary and project-based subjects alongside existing offerings.

According to WBCHSE president Chiranjib Bhattacharrya, this revamp is intended to enhance student engagement, foster interdisciplinary skills, and better prepare learners for future academic and career fields by aligning education with current global developments.


1. What Changes Are Being Introduced

WBCHSE will roll out a mix of new subjects under two categories:

Council Assisted Courses (CAC)

These subjects will be offered with regular guidance from the council and include:

  • Artificial Intelligence & Data Science (AIDS)
  • Applied Artificial Intelligence (APAI)
  • Cyber Security (CBST)

For these CAC subjects, WBCHSE plans to hold online classes beyond school hours, offering flexibility and expert-led instruction through digital platforms.

Council Taught Courses (CTC)

These subjects are directly overseen and taught by the council as part of the curriculum, and they are designed to be project-based, allowing students to learn through hands-on activities, research and interdisciplinary exploration:

  • Entrepreneurship and Related Legal Rights (ERLR)
  • Intellectual Property Rights and Laws (IPRL)
  • Indology (INDO)
  • Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (SDGC)

These project-based subjects aim to build real-world understanding and problem-solving competencies among students. Schools will be able to offer these subjects if they meet prescribed criteria, and the council will maintain a database of enrolled students and their subject choices.

Aligning Education With Emerging Career Needs

The inclusion of subjects like artificial intelligence, data science and cyber security reflects growing demand for technology-related skills across industries. By integrating these topics at the school level, students get early exposure to fields that are shaping future job markets.

Encouraging Interdisciplinary Learning

Project-based courses such as intellectual property rights, entrepreneurship and sustainable development encourage learners to connect knowledge across disciplines — blending legal, economic, cultural and global insights.

Boosting Engagement and Practical Skills

Contemporary subjects and hands-on projects make learning more interactive, encouraging students to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply theoretical knowledge to real-life contexts.


3. Mode of Delivery

The new subjects will be predominantly delivered online through live sessions and pre-recorded lectures conducted by qualified subject experts. However, offline, district-wise classes may be organised depending on local requirements.

This blended approach aims to ensure quality instruction while expanding access across schools throughout the state.
