India expands its presence to 19 business schools in the latest QS rankings, but its three leading IIMs fall in the global table as international competition intensifies.
New Delhi — India’s leading management institutes have faced a setback in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, even as the country’s overall representation in the international rankings continues to grow. IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta all remain among the world’s top 100 MBA programmes, but each has slipped from its previous position.
IIM Bangalore is the highest-ranked Indian business school, placed joint 64th globally, down from 52nd in the previous edition. IIM Ahmedabad stands at joint 70th, compared with 58th last year, while IIM Calcutta has fallen to 95th from 64th.
The results, released on September 16, cover more than 400 full-time MBA programmes across 65 countries and territories. They also reveal a more complicated picture for Indian management education: 19 Indian institutions now feature in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, up sharply from five in 2020.
QS Global MBA Rankings 2027: IIM Bangalore leads India at 64th
IIM Bangalore has retained its position as India’s highest-ranked institution in the QS global MBA table, despite dropping 12 places from last year.
Its overall position, however, does not tell the entire story.
The Bengaluru-based institute performed particularly strongly on employability, ranking 29th worldwide and second in Asia on that indicator. It also secured a strong position in thought leadership, suggesting that its performance varies considerably across the individual measures used by QS.
The result highlights why an overall ranking needs to be read alongside the underlying indicators. A movement down the global table does not automatically mean that every aspect of a programme has weakened.
IIM Ahmedabad at 70th, IIM Calcutta at 95th
IIM Ahmedabad has been placed joint 70th globally, falling from 58th in the previous ranking.
The institute’s profile remains comparatively strong in several areas, including entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes. QS-based reporting places IIM Ahmedabad at 84th globally on that indicator, making it the only Indian MBA institution in the global top 100 for entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes.
IIM Calcutta recorded the sharpest decline among India’s three top-ranked IIMs.
It moved from 64th in the previous edition to 95th in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027. Despite the 31-place drop, the Kolkata-based institute remains inside the global top 100. Its employability position, at 39th globally, is considerably stronger than its overall ranking.
QS MBA Rankings 2027: Top Indian institutes
| Indian B-school | QS Global MBA Ranking 2027 | Previous ranking |
|---|---|---|
| IIM Bangalore | 64= | 52 |
| IIM Ahmedabad | 70= | 58 |
| IIM Calcutta | 95 | 64 |
| O.P. Jindal Global University | 171–180 | — |
| IIM Kozhikode | 201–250 | 201–250 |
| IIM Indore | 201–250 | 151–200 |
| IIM Lucknow | 251–300 | 201–250 |
| Woxsen School of Business | 251–300 | 201–250 |
The QS results show that the three IIMs remain the only Indian institutions inside the global top 100 for full-time MBA programmes.
India adds more MBA institutions to the global rankings
The more encouraging part of the latest results is the expansion of India’s overall footprint.
Nineteen Indian business schools feature in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, including five new entrants. Business Standard noted that India’s representation has more than tripled from five institutions in 2020.
Among the new Indian entries are O.P. Jindal Global University, Jaipuria Institute of Management, CHRIST’s School of Business and Management, Manav Rachna’s School of Leadership and Management, and Vikrant University Gwalior.
That expansion matters because it points to a broader internationalisation of Indian management education beyond the traditional IIM names.
At the same time, the rankings show that greater representation does not necessarily translate into higher positions for established institutions.
Why did the top IIMs fall in the QS MBA rankings?
The latest results need to be read in the context of QS methodology.
QS evaluates full-time MBA programmes using five broad areas: employability, return on investment or value for money, alumni outcomes and entrepreneurship, thought leadership, and diversity. Employability carries the largest weight in the methodology.
Reporting on the 2027 edition points to stronger performance by international competitors in areas including return on investment, entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes and diversity. Careers360 also reported substantial changes in the value-for-money scores of the three leading IIMs, while noting that these ranking scores should not be interpreted as a direct percentage fall in graduates’ actual salaries or financial returns.
That distinction is important.
A QS ranking is a comparative measurement. If other institutions improve faster on particular indicators, an Indian school can move down the table even without a corresponding deterioration across every aspect of its programme.
MIT Sloan takes the global No. 1 position
At the top of the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, MIT Sloan School of Management occupies first place.
Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania complete the top four, giving the United States all of the first four positions.
The result underlines the scale of international competition facing Indian business schools. QS evaluated 424 programmes in the latest edition, with the United States accounting for 133 ranked programmes.
For Indian institutions, therefore, the challenge is no longer only about entering global rankings. It is increasingly about improving performance across the indicators that determine where those institutions sit within the rankings.
What the QS MBA Rankings 2027 mean for Indian MBA aspirants
For students considering an MBA, the latest QS list offers useful context but should not be treated as the sole measure of programme quality.
The results show clear differences between overall global rank and individual performance indicators. IIM Bangalore, for example, is ranked 64th overall but 29th globally for employability. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta also perform substantially better on employability than their overall positions might suggest.
For prospective students, that makes factors such as placement outcomes, curriculum, fees, alumni networks, career services, programme structure and individual career goals relevant alongside international rankings.
The 2027 QS results ultimately present two simultaneous stories for Indian management education: India’s global MBA footprint is getting wider, while its leading institutions face tougher competition for higher positions.
That tension may be one of the most significant takeaways from this year’s rankings.
