In a major boost to school education, the Government of Odisha has announced plans to develop around 800 schools into model educational institutions under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme.

The initiative, led by Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to significantly upgrade the quality of education by introducing modern infrastructure, digital tools, and innovative teaching practices across the state.

What Will Change in These Model Schools?

The selected schools will be transformed into centres of excellence, offering a more advanced and holistic learning environment. Key upgrades include:

  • Smart classrooms and digital learning platforms
  • Modern infrastructure and improved school facilities
  • Integration of innovative teaching methodologies
  • Focus on creativity, skills, and experiential learning

These improvements are designed to align with national education reforms and ensure that students receive quality, future-ready education.

Focus on Holistic and Skill-Based Education

Speaking at a school event in Keonjhar district, the Chief Minister emphasised that education should go beyond textbooks.

He highlighted that students must develop:

  • Creativity and innovation
  • Practical skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Ethical values, discipline, and character

According to him, education is not just about securing jobs but about building a meaningful and empowered life.

Backed by Strong Budgetary Support

To support such large-scale reforms, the Odisha government has allocated a substantial budget for the education sector.

  • Over ₹31,000 crore earmarked for school and mass education
  • Continued recruitment of thousands of teachers
  • Expansion of model school initiatives across districts

This financial commitment reflects the state’s focus on strengthening public education infrastructure and outcomes.

Part of a Larger Education Reform Vision

The initiative is part of a broader transformation strategy in Odisha’s education system. The PM SHRI scheme, launched by the Government of India, aims to develop exemplar schools that showcase the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

In Odisha, this vision is further complemented by efforts such as:

  • Establishing model primary schools in every panchayat
  • Strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy
  • Expanding access to quality education in rural and tribal areas
