In a pivotal move toward transforming data access and analytics in India, the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched the beta version of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server on the eSankhyiki portal — the country’s official statistics platform. This strategic initiative marks a significant advancement in open government data, AI-ready public data infrastructure, and evidence-based policymaking.

Why the MCP Server Matters

The MCP server is a technology interface that allows users to connect AI tools and analytical applications directly to official government datasets, bypassing the traditional requirement of manually downloading and processing large data files. This capability is critical for:

  • Real-time data queries from AI and analytics platforms
  • Automated report generation using verified official statistics
  • Higher productivity for researchers, businesses, educators, and policymakers
  • Reduced technical barriers for data access and usability

By enabling direct machine-level access to government statistics, India is laying the groundwork for more responsive, efficient, and transparent data utilisation across sectors.

Integration with eSankhyiki Portal

The MCP server is integrated with eSankhyiki, India’s national portal for official statistics, which already hosts a vast repository of socio-economic and macroeconomic datasets. This integration ensures that users can access centralised, trusted, and up-to-date government statistics within a single secure environment.

eSankhyiki has previously crossed significant data milestones, indicating wide adoption and a large volume of statistical records — further enhancing the value of the MCP integration.

Data Products in the Beta Release

At launch, the MCP server supports seven key official datasets, including:

  1. Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)
  2. Consumer Price Index (CPI)
  3. Annual Survey of Industries (ASI)
  4. Index of Industrial Production (IIP)
  5. National Accounts Statistics (NAS)
  6. Wholesale Price Index (WPI)
  7. Environmental Statistics

These datasets span vital areas of the Indian economy and society, enabling rich analytical opportunities for users.

Enhanced Accessibility and Efficiency

Traditionally, accessing official statistics involved navigating portals, downloading large datasets, and preprocessing data before analysis — a time-consuming process that could delay insights. With the MCP server:

  • AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and custom analytics applications can fetch verified data seamlessly.
  • Users can merge multiple datasets and automate sophisticated analyses.
  • Data access is faster, more reliable, and less dependent on manual effort.

This shift empowers users to spend more time on meaningful analysis and decision-making rather than data preparation.

Strategic Alignment with India’s Digital and AI Vision

The launch of the MCP server comes ahead of the India AI Impact Summit (15–20 February 2026), highlighting the government’s intention to align statistical infrastructure with the broader AI and digital governance agenda.

It also aligns with the objectives of Working Group 6 on Democratising AI, which seeks to expand equitable access to data and computational tools — critical components of a technology-inclusive future.

Implications for Stakeholders

For Policymakers

Direct access to real-time, official data enables faster evidence-based policy formulation and a stronger foundation for national plans like Viksit Bharat.

For Businesses & Startups

Market analysts, fintech developers, and industry researchers can integrate official statistics into tools, dashboards, and models, enhancing competitiveness and innovation.

For Researchers & Academia

Academicians, data scientists, and students can access authoritative datasets with speed and precision, improving research quality and academic output.
