New Delhi, February 17, 2026 – The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has formally partnered with the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) to establish VAYYU, a Virtual Research Centre focused on pioneering research in aerosol-meteorology interactions, Himalayan atmosphere-cryosphere dynamics, and urban air quality. 🔬 CryoSCOPE Project

A €10 million multidisciplinary initiative funded by the European Union, SERI (Switzerland), and India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, this project deploys advanced monitoring systems in Kargil to study atmosphere–cryosphere–hydrosphere interactions and quantify aerosol impacts on glacier melt.

🏙 CO-ENHANCIN Project

Supported by the Research Council of Finland, CO-ENHANCIN has enabled the creation of a Chennai urban observatory worth approximately ₹5 crore. It includes cutting-edge instruments such as aerosol analysers, lidar profilers, rain radar, and atmospheric chemistry tools to generate high-resolution data on urban air quality and land–atmosphere processes.

These platforms provide a rich scientific foundation for VAYYU’s integrated research agenda.


5. Human Resource Development & Academic Exchange
