High-Level BIMSTEC Workshop on Data Assimilation and Forecast Verification Kicks Off in Noida

Introduction

The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), a sub-ordinate office of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), is organizing a high-level, two-week workshop from July 15 to 26, 2024, in Noida. This workshop, aimed at enhancing skills and sharing knowledge in Data Assimilation and Forecast Verification Techniques, brings together key officials from the National Hydrology and Meteorology Services of BIMSTEC member countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

Workshop Details

The workshop is designed to address the shared weather conditions and meteorological challenges faced by BIMSTEC countries. By fostering international capacity building and promoting regional cooperation, the workshop seeks to improve the delivery of skilful meteorological services to society.

Inauguration and Keynote Address

The event was inaugurated by Shri Vishwajeet Sahay, Additional Secretary and Finance Adviser, MoES, on July 15, 2024. During his keynote address, he emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the role of such workshops in enhancing meteorological services.

Focus on Skill Enhancement

Dr. V.S. Prasad, Head of NCMRWF, highlighted the workshop’s objectives, stating, “BIMSTEC countries share similar weather conditions and challenges of rendering skilful meteorological services to society. This workshop reflects our dedication to fostering international capacity building, knowledge sharing, and promoting regional cooperation in the BIMSTEC region.”

Regional Cooperation and Knowledge Sharing

The BIMSTEC Centre for Weather and Climate (BCWC) at NCMRWF, Noida, plays a crucial role in consolidating scientific and technical resources, establishing an institutional mechanism to boost regional cooperation amongst BIMSTEC countries. This workshop is a testament to the commitment to fostering collaborative efforts in the region.

Interactive Sessions and Hands-on Training

The workshop includes interactive sessions with domain experts and hands-on training modules. These sessions are designed to foster practical understanding and application of data assimilation and forecast verification techniques, particularly in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. This approach aims to enhance human resources capacity building and scientific knowledge sharing, especially in forecasting, early warning systems, and observing systems.
