On Teacher’s Day 2025, Visakhapatnam stands out as a beacon of educational innovation. Two remarkable initiatives, GeniScience and Speaking Chalk, are reshaping how children learn by making education engaging, interactive, and joyful. From hands-on science experiments to playful English lessons, these programs are transforming classrooms into spaces of curiosity and confidence. Let’s dive into how these initiatives are redefining education in India and inspiring the next generation.

Key Points:

  • Visakhapatnam is home to innovative teaching methods that prioritize experiential learning.
  • GeniScience and Speaking Chalk empower students through creativity and engagement.
  • These initiatives align with the spirit of Teacher’s Day by celebrating transformative education.

GeniScience: Bringing Science to Life with Hands-On Models

Key Points:

  • Founded by Pramod Kumar Reddy in 2023 to make science tactile and engaging.
  • Features the Genibox, a kit with over 100 working models for Classes III to X.
  • Impacts government schools and underserved communities through free kits and outreach.
  • Gained recognition on Shark Tank India for its innovative approach.

In 2004, Pramod Kumar Reddy swapped chalkboard diagrams for a live science experiment, crafting a simple motor from copper wire and magnets. The result? A classroom buzzing with excitement and questions. This moment sparked the creation of GeniScience, a venture dedicated to making STEM education hands-on and accessible. The Genibox, a collection of over 100 durable, student-assembled models, covers concepts from basic circuits to complex mechanics.

Pramod’s journey took him from rural schools to the prestigious Shiv Nadar Foundation, where his projects—like converting human hair into organic manure—won national awards. Today, GeniScience has reached over 100 schools, with free kits distributed to government school students and plans to collaborate with NGOs serving fishing communities. With aspirations to scale up after a strong Shark Tank India showing, Pramod’s mission is clear: to make science a tangible adventure that students own.

“When students ask questions and build models, science becomes theirs,” says Pramod.

Speaking Chalk: Building Confidence Through Playful English Lessons

Key Points:

  • Founded by Sandhya Godey to teach spoken English in government schools.
  • Volunteers use stories, music, and games to make learning fun and inclusive.
  • Expanded to teach science, math, and social studies at Ambedkar High School.
  • 23 volunteers from diverse backgrounds ensure consistent, impactful sessions.

Nine years ago, Sandhya Godey stepped into a Visakhapatnam government school with a mission to help students speak English confidently. Realizing that starting in Class X was too late, she launched Speaking Chalk, a volunteer-driven initiative that now teaches foundational English language skills to younger students. Every Thursday, 23 volunteers—teachers, storytellers, and entrepreneurs—gather at schools like Ambedkar High School to deliver lessons through storytelling, music, games, and drama.

Saturdays bring an expanded curriculum, including science, mathematics, and map-pointing, all taught bilingually to ensure inclusivity. Volunteers follow a structured weekly plan, refining their approach through feedback. By focusing on phonetics and real-world connections, Speaking Chalk helps students overcome hesitation and speak English with ease.

“A child’s first English sentence, however imperfect, is a victory,” says Sandhya.

Why These Initiatives Are Game-Changers

Key Points:

  • Address gaps in engagement and resource access in India’s education system.
  • Promote experiential learning and play-based education for lasting impact.
  • Inspire educators and parents to adopt innovative teaching methods.

GeniScience and Speaking Chalk embody the essence of Teacher’s Day by showing how education can be both impactful and joyful. They tackle challenges like rote learning and limited resources, fostering critical thinking and confidence. These programs prove that innovative education doesn’t require vast funding—just passion, creativity, and a commitment to students.
