The National Medical Commission (NMC) has published the NEET PG 2026 seat matrix for the 2026–27 academic year, covering postgraduate medical seats across institutions and specialties. The development comes just before the next major counselling step: the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will begin the PwD Round 1 registration process on October 1, 2026.
The latest matrix puts the number of MD, MS and postgraduate diploma seats at around 58,000, up from 52,173 in the previous academic cycle. That represents an increase of roughly 11 per cent. Private and deemed medical institutions have recorded a particularly notable expansion, while government medical colleges have also added seats.
For thousands of NEET PG aspirants, however, the headline number is only the beginning. The real question is where those seats are located, which specialties have expanded and how the available choices fit an individual candidate’s rank, category and preferred course.

PwD Registration Begins October 1: Candidates Face a Separate Assessment Timeline
For candidates applying under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category, the immediate deadline is more specific.
The MCC is scheduled to open the NEET PG 2026 Round 1 registration facility for PwD candidates on October 1. Candidates will need to follow the medical assessment process prescribed for postgraduate admissions.
The Primary Medical Assessment Board will remain available from October 1 and is scheduled to continue until 5 PM on October 9, 2026. Candidates have been advised to complete the required assessment at the designated centre within this window.
There is also a separate window for candidates who require an appellate medical assessment.
Appellate assessment window
The Appellate Medical Assessment Board is scheduled to conduct assessments from 10 AM on October 5 to 5 PM on October 12, 2026.
The dates make the PwD process particularly time-sensitive. Candidates should not treat the registration and medical assessment as unrelated steps: the assessment process is part of establishing eligibility under the PwD category for the counselling process.

Candidates should carefully examine the applicable category, quota and institution type before placing a course on their preference list.
4. Build choices around the actual matrix
The most useful purpose of the NMC document is practical: it allows candidates to construct and revise their choices using the latest officially published seat information rather than relying solely on older counselling data.
NBEMS Will Also Release NEET PG Examination Information
Another development scheduled for October 1 concerns the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
According to the report, NBEMS is scheduled to provide candidates with question identification numbers, correct answers, their recorded or marked responses and the scores awarded for individual questions.
That information gives candidates a more detailed view of how their NEET PG 2026 examination performance was evaluated.
For aspirants already moving into the counselling phase, the release comes at a critical point: the examination has produced the rank, and the seat matrix now begins to define the range of postgraduate options available.
