In a major shift aligned with ongoing education reforms, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to conduct its second board examination for Class 10 students in mid-May 2026, with over 6.6 lakh students registered for the exam.

This marks the first large-scale implementation of CBSE’s dual-exam system, introduced to provide students with a second opportunity to improve their performance.

Massive Participation in Second Attempt

According to official data:

  • 6.68 lakh+ students have registered for the second exam
  • Majority are appearing for performance improvement, not just passing
  • Around:
    • 5.25 lakh students → improvement category
    • 85,000+ students → compartment category

This indicates strong acceptance of the new system among students and parents.

Exam Schedule and Pattern

  • Exam Dates: May 15 to May 21, 2026
  • Mode: Written board examination
  • Subjects:
    • Core subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Science, English
    • Language and elective subjects

Students are allowed to reappear in up to three subjects to improve their scores.

What is the CBSE Dual-Exam System?

The new system, introduced from the 2026 academic session, includes:

  • First Exam (Main): February–March
  • Second Exam (Optional): May

👉 Key feature:

  • Students can retain the best score from both attempts in their final marksheet

The reform is part of broader changes inspired by the National Education Policy 2020, aimed at reducing exam stress and promoting flexibility.

  • Science is the most preferred subject for reappearance
  • Followed by:
    • Mathematics
    • Social Science
    • English

Many students are opting for multiple subjects:

  • ~2.79 lakh → two subjects
  • ~1.97 lakh → three subjects

This reflects a strong focus on score improvement rather than just passing.

Why This Reform Matters

✅ Reduces Exam Pressure

Students get a second chance without waiting a full year

✅ Encourages Improvement

Focus shifts from “pass/fail” to performance enhancement

✅ Flexible Learning Approach

Aligns with global assessment practices

✅ Student-Centric System

Recognises that one exam may not reflect true ability
