Engineers’ Day 2026: Women’s IIT Intake Rises 52%, But Gender Gap Persists

NEW DELHI — On Engineers’ Day 2026, India’s premier engineering institutes are showing a measurable shift in gender representation. The number of women entering the Indian Institutes of Technology has risen sharply since the introduction of supernumerary seats, but the numbers also reveal how far the system remains from gender parity.

Across the 23 IITs, the number of female students allotted seats increased from 2,416 in 2019 to 3,664 in 2025 — a 52% rise. Total seats allotted during the same period grew by about 34%, from 13,604 to 18,188.

Yet the headline figure comes with a qualification. Women’s share of IIT admissions increased from 17.76% to 20.15%, a gain of just 2.39 percentage points over six years. In other words, more women are entering India’s elite engineering institutions, but they still account for only about one in five students.


IIT Women’s Intake Has Grown Faster Than Overall Seats

The change becomes clearer when absolute numbers and percentages are viewed together.

The female intake increased by roughly 52%, while the total number of seats allotted grew by around 34%. That means the expansion in women’s participation has outpaced the overall growth of IIT admissions.

The change was not accidental. It followed a deliberate policy intervention aimed at increasing the number of women in engineering.

Supernumerary seats changed the admissions landscape

The government introduced supernumerary seats for women in IITs with a stated goal of raising female enrolment from around 8% to 20% over several years.

The policy created 835 additional seats in 2018-19 and another 1,122 in 2019-20. These seats were designed to increase women’s representation without cutting the number of gender-neutral seats available to other candidates.

The effect can now be seen across the IIT system.

In 2019, female representation ranged from 16.67% at IIT Goa to 20.68% at IIT Indore. By 2025, every IIT in the dataset had reached roughly 19% or more female representation. IIT Tirupati recorded the highest share at 21.57%, followed by IIT Madras at 21.09%.


Engineers’ Day 2026: More Women Are Entering IITs, But Parity Is Still Distant

The numbers offer a more complicated picture than a simple success story.

Women now make up roughly one-fifth of IIT admissions. That is a substantial change from the years when female representation remained in single digits. But the proportion is still well below half of the student population.

Earlier analysis of five leading IITs — Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur and Kharagpur — also found that female admissions had nearly doubled between 2018 and 2025. At the same time, the absolute difference between male and female admissions widened from 7,007 to 9,153.

That tension matters.

A larger number of women in engineering classrooms does not automatically mean the gender gap has disappeared. It shows that the entry pipeline has widened, but not that the destination has become equal.


JEE Advanced 2026 Shows Another Shift

The IIT admission figures are part of a broader change visible in JEE Advanced 2026.

For the first time, more than 10,000 female candidates qualified for IIT admissions. The number rose from 5,356 in 2019 to 10,107 in 2026 — an increase of nearly 89%.

Female candidates also recorded their highest-ever JEE Advanced qualification rate. Of the 40,562 women who appeared for the examination in 2026, 24.9% qualified, putting nearly one in four female candidates into the Common Rank List.

The rise suggests that the story is not limited to additional seats. More women are reaching the examination stage, competing successfully and entering the pipeline for elite engineering education.


The Next Challenge Begins After Admission

For years, the central question was how to get more girls into engineering.

That question is changing.

Now the focus increasingly needs to extend to what happens after admission — the branches students choose, whether they remain in technical careers, their access to research opportunities, and how many eventually move into senior positions in academia, industry and technology.

Research and previous reporting have highlighted this gap: rising enrolment has not automatically translated into gender parity across the wider STEM pipeline.

The distinction is crucial because an IIT seat is only the beginning of an engineering career.


IIT Gender Diversity Is Becoming More Consistent

One of the more striking features of the latest data is its consistency.

The increase is no longer confined to a handful of older IITs. IIT Bombay’s female share rose from 17.78% in 2019 to 19.57% in 2025, while IIT Kharagpur moved from 16.82% to 19.19%. IIT Hyderabad rose from 18.61% to 20.13%.

That suggests the policy intervention has helped establish a more uniform baseline across the IIT system.

The numbers do not yet show parity. But they do show that the old picture of engineering campuses being overwhelmingly male is gradually changing.

A milestone, not an endpoint

Engineers’ Day traditionally celebrates the people who design India’s infrastructure, technology and industrial future. In 2026, the occasion also offers a useful measure of who gets to participate in that future.

The 52% rise in women’s IIT intake since 2019 is significant. So is the more modest rise in their overall share.

Both figures need to be read together.

India has succeeded in bringing substantially more women through the gates of its most selective engineering institutions. The harder task now is ensuring that those women have equal opportunities to shape the laboratories, companies, research teams and technologies that come next.
