Medical aspirants across the country have received encouraging news as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, approving a record 1,36,939 undergraduate medical seats across 823 medical colleges in India. The latest seat matrix reflects an addition of 9,911 MBBS seats compared to the previous academic year, marking one of the largest annual expansions in recent years.

The state now offers more than 15,000 MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges after receiving one of the largest annual increases. Karnataka’s long-established network of private medical institutions continues to make it India’s leading destination for undergraduate medical education.
Other States Also Record Significant Growth
Apart from Karnataka, several other states have strengthened their medical education capacity.

Many of these additions come through higher intake approvals at existing colleges as well as newly established institutions, expanding opportunities for aspiring doctors across the country.

Although the increase of nearly 10,000 MBBS seats is welcome, competition for admission remains extremely high.
This year, more than 11.21 lakh candidates qualified NEET UG 2026, meaning that the number of eligible candidates continues to far exceed the number of available MBBS seats. Consequently, government medical colleges are expected to remain highly competitive, particularly for candidates seeking low-cost medical education.
Private Sector Expansion Raises Affordability Questions
The growing share of private medical colleges also revives discussions about affordability.
While additional seats improve access, tuition fees at many private institutions remain substantially higher than those in government colleges.
