In a major push towards digital transformation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced that over 2 lakh students from Classes 9 to 12 will receive Artificial Intelligence (AI) training under its skill development initiative.

This move marks a significant shift in India’s education ecosystem, where emerging technologies like AI are being integrated into school-level learning to prepare students for the future workforce.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

  • 👩‍🎓 Beneficiaries: 2 lakh+ students
  • 🏫 Coverage: Around 1,200 government secondary schools
  • 📘 Program: ‘AI For All’ module
  • ⏱️ Duration: 4-hour foundational AI course
  • 🎯 Target Group: Class 9 to 12 students

The initiative is part of ‘Project Praveen’, a vocational training programme under the Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission (UPSDM).

Understanding ‘AI For All’: What Students Will Learn

The specially designed AI module focuses on building foundational digital and analytical skills, including:

  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Creative and critical thinking
  • Data analysis fundamentals
  • Digital literacy

The curriculum is structured to make AI accessible and practical, even for students without a technical background.

Project Praveen: Bridging Education and Employability

‘Project Praveen’ is a 210-hour free skill development programme that runs alongside regular schooling.

🔧 Training Sectors Include:

  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Healthcare
  • Beauty & wellness
  • Electronics

The integration of AI into this programme represents a strategic upgrade, aligning traditional vocational training with modern technological demands.

Job-Oriented AI Learning: Beyond Theory

Unlike conventional classroom teaching, this initiative focuses on real-world application of AI skills across multiple job roles:

  • IT customer care services
  • Healthcare assistance
  • Digital services (Digital Mitra)
  • Small-scale entrepreneurship (e.g., tailoring, manufacturing)

This ensures that students are not just learning AI concepts but also understanding their practical use in everyday professions.

Teacher Training & Implementation Strategy

To ensure effective delivery:

  • Trainers must complete the AI course before the 2026–27 academic session
  • Specialized advanced modules will be provided for instructors
  • Standardized curriculum will be implemented across schools

This highlights a systematic approach, focusing not just on students but also on teacher readiness.

Policy Context: UP’s Larger AI Vision

This initiative is not isolated—it is part of a broader strategy to position Uttar Pradesh as a technology and AI hub.

Key supporting developments include:

  • State-level AI mission with significant investments
  • Expansion of digital infrastructure and AI labs
  • Focus on skill-based education and employment generation

These efforts align with India’s broader push to create a future-ready, tech-driven workforce.

Analytical Perspective: Why This Move Matters

✅ Strengths

  • Early exposure to AI at school level
  • Focus on employability and practical skills
  • Large-scale implementation across public schools
  • Integration with vocational education

⚠️ Challenges

  • Digital infrastructure gaps in rural schools
  • Need for continuous teacher training
  • Ensuring consistent quality across institutions

National Significance: A Model for Other States?

India is increasingly prioritizing AI in education through multiple initiatives:

  • AI literacy programs at school level
  • Skill development missions targeting youth
  • Integration of technology in vocational training

Uttar Pradesh’s large-scale rollout could serve as a replicable model for other states, accelerating nationwide adoption of AI education.
