The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has achieved a notable milestone by being co-featured in the Guinness World Records in the category of the largest electric bicycle delivery, marking a proud moment for Indian innovation and sustainable mobility efforts.
Historic Achievement in Sustainable Mobility
The Guinness World Record was set during a large-scale electric bicycle distribution drive conducted in Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh. Organised by the Andhra Pradesh government through the Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA) in collaboration with EMotorad and the District Collectorate of Chittoor, the initiative focused on mass delivery of e-bikes to residents, promoting eco-friendly transport options.
During this unique event, thousands of electric bicycles were delivered within a continuous time frame, creating the scale required for a Guinness World Record. Electric bicycles are increasingly recognised as low-carbon, affordable solutions for short-distance travel and play a crucial role in reducing emissions from daily commuting.
IIT Kanpur’s Role and Technical Contribution
IIT Kanpur participated as the technical partner under its Kuppam Net Zero Constituency Project, offering expertise in planning, implementation strategies, and technical guidance to ensure the initiative’s success.
Leadership and coordination were strengthened by two distinguished IIT Kanpur alumni:
- Hari Shankar, Consultant to the Net Zero project
- Vikas Marmat (IAS), Project Director at KADA
They played key roles in coordinating this mass delivery effort. Principal investigators from the institute, Prof. Manoj K. Tiwari and Prof. Rajeev Jindal, formally represented IIT Kanpur at the event and highlighted the institute’s contribution.
Recognition and Official Presentation
The official Guinness World Records certificate was presented on site by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable transport initiatives.
In response to this achievement, IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal described the record as a reflection of the institute’s long-standing dedication to sustainability, innovation, and public-oriented technological solutions. He emphasised that the achievement showcases how academic expertise can successfully blend with government policy and administrative coordination to deliver impactful outcomes on the ground.
Professors Tiwari and Jindal further noted that this recognition adds momentum to IIT Kanpur’s ongoing sustainability efforts and their ability to contribute to large-scale impact projects that benefit society at the grassroots level.
